Hero Angeles joins the cast of "Dyesebel"

FIRST READ ON PEP: Hero Angeles joins the cast of "Dyesebel"

Carmen Soo, to partner with Jericho Rosales in an ABS-CBN soap

Hindi mo rin nga aakalaing she’s 29 years old dahil she looks younger than her age.

In Malaysia where she was born and raised, Carmen is one of the most popular movie and tv stars. She was adjudged Most Promising Actress in 2006 for her performance in The Third Generation.

Bale apat na buwan magaganap ang siyuting for the series. Two months dito sa Pilipinas at two months sa Malaysia.

* * *

“I started as a commercial model,” ani Carmen. “I was 17 when I won in a talent search conducted by a magazine in Malaysia called Verve.”

Carmen met with select movie press last Wednesday and they learned that this is not her first time to visit the country.

Nakapunta na raw siya ng Pilipinas when she shot a tv commercial here.

On the possibility of her falling in love with Jericho, ani Carmen, alam niyang taken na ang aktor.

* * *

For his part, Jericho said pretty sure siyang si Heart Evangelista na ngang talaga ang babaing gugustuhin niyang makasama habambuhay. But he doesn’t deny that he finds Carmen beautiful.

Ang teleseryeng gagawin nila ay ikalawa ni Jericho for a foreign producer. He just finished shooting a movie for an international outfit where one of the featured actors is Fil-Am Dante Basco.

Himself a product of a talent search just like Carmen, Jericho had gone a long way. He was in his late teens when he joined ABS-CBN’s Star Circle Batch 4 in 1997.

Jericho has a string of teleseryes to his name aside from several guest appearances in drama shows. He received his first recognition in 1998 as Best New TV Personality and won a Best Performance by a Lead Actor plum from the PMPC Star Awards for a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode. [source of news]

Hana Kimi Taiwanese & Japanese Versions Struggle in the Top 10

Although the two Hana Kimi shows from rival networks didn’t collide in their respective timeslots (ABS-CBN’s Taiwanese version is under the daytime block while GMA’s Japanese version is under the primetime block), they are struggling to enter the Top 10 in their respective blocks.

Hana Kimi Taiwanese made it to no. 9 in daytime last Tuesday with 12.9 percent but failed to enter the Top 10 last Wednesday and Thursday. Hana Kimi Japanese, on the other hand, made it to no. 10 in primetime last Tuesday and Wednesday but failed to enter the Top 10 yesterday when Palos took over the slot.

Kamandag took over the top spot last Wednesday night to be the second Philippine program to reach no. 1 since Marimar dominated the primetime block last August 2007. However, Kamandag’s reign was cut short as Joaquin Bordado reclaimed the summit last night.

New shows “Babangong Ako’t Dudurugin Kita” and “PBB Teen Edition Plus” are trending in 3rd and 5th place respectively. These two shows could pull a surprise anytime soon.

Joaquin Bordado is the New No. 1 TV Program( Mega Manila)

With the series finale of Marimar last March 14, 2008, Joaquin Bordado took over the top spot on March 17 to become the newest leader on Philippine television. Marimar ruled the primetime block since August 2007 - that’s 8 months of being no. 1 in Mega Manila. It even snatched the top spot nationwide last February. Although the Robin Padilla-starrer is the current no. 1 in 4 consecutive days since March 17, it wasn’t able to pull a 40% and above ratings like what Marimar did when it was still running. Marimar even registered a whopping 52.6% on its last episode beating the 52.1% rating posted by Darna on April 14, 2005. In non-cable households, Marimar’s final episode posted an even higher rating of 57.5 percent.

With the exit of Marimar and Coffee Prince, GMA’s late-night reality program “Kung Ako Ikaw” and ABS-CBN’s soap “Maging Sino Ka Man” were both able to enter the top 10 from time to time.

Yeng Constantino prefers to stay away from money matters

Yeng Constantino prefers to stay away from money matters
A self-confessed Papa's girl, Yeng Constantino trusts her father Joselito to manage her finances for her.

After winning as the Grand Star Dreamer of Pinoy Dream Academy, Yeng has been facing a lot of intrigues, the latest of which is about the mismanagement of her finances. There have been reports claiming that the singer-songwriter is already bankrupt and unable to pay debts to her manager, Jay Lavilles.

The top scholar of PDA maintained that if there were financial problems, she would be the first to know about them.

Does she have an idea about the identity of the person/s spreading the rumors about the mismanagement of her finances?

Yeng narrated her cash flow for the benefit of those doubting the stability of her finances.

Does she have her own bank account?

She says that the money she gives to her father is for the payment of their bills and for the construction of their house. Yeng is helping her family construct their own home in Rizal to replace the one that was demolished in the past. The rock musician even shared her blessings for her relatives by giving away food for Noche Buena. However, she does get to keep the payment for her guestings such as Homeboy, Boy and Kris, and ASAP ‘08. She only splurged on herself by purchasing a purple-colored Ibañez guitar.

Does she know of any enemies who want to ruin her reputation?

"Hindi ko po alam basta rock ‘n roll lang po ako," was Yeng's last words before rushing off to the Aliw Theater to perform her signature songs for a concert of Ballet Manila.

Court junks GMA-7's petition to stop ABS-CBN from airing reports about alleged TV ratings scam

The TV ratings dispute continues.

A new development in the TV ratings scandal transpired yesterday, March 7, when the Quezon City Regional trial Court (QC RTC) junked the petition of GMA-7 to stop rival network ABS-CBN from airing reports about the alleged TV ratings manipulation which supposedly cast "dishonor, discredit, and disrepute" to the Kapuso network.

In his ruling, Judge Alexander Balut denied GMA Network's petition for preliminary injunction on three grounds: GMA-7's petition to stop ABS-CBN's supposedly libelous reports comes too late—the reports have already been aired; GMA-7's petition for injunction goes beyond the prayer contained in its complaint; and GMA-7's petition for injunction constitutes prior restraint of freedom of expression and, therefore, unconstitutional.

Judge Balut also stated in his ruling that since ABS-CBN had already aired its reports, there is nothing for the court to stop.

"It is clear that plaintiff's causes of action are based on acts that were already consummated. Having already been committed, these acts can no longer be enjoined. Simply stated, there is actually nothing to enjoin," wrote the judge in his ruling.

Judge Balut also ruled that it "appears" as though GMA-7 "seeks to enjoin acts beyond the prayer in the complaint", adding that "[this] cannot be done. It is anathema to an existing jurisprudence on the matter."

The judge also said that the court can't grant the petition for preliminary injunction because it would violate the Constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression.

"To issue the writ of preliminary injunction in this case would be to impermissibly interfere defendants' freedom of expression. It would be constitutive of a previous restraint or censorship, which no less than the Constitution abhors," Judge Inting wrote.

Balut added that GMA-7 failed to lay down enough justifiable grounds to warrant prior restraint of ABS-CBN's reports.

"Applying one of the tests, i.e., The Clear and Present Danger Rule, the Court finds that plaintiff failed to lay down factual bases constituting a clear and present danger that would justify prior restraint. In fact, the bone of contention is purely civil in nature, such that the "substantive evil" which the State has the ultimate right to prevent is wanting."

OTHER OPTIONS. But Judge Balut also wrote in his decision that GMA-7 may still avail of other legal remedies outside of a preliminary injunction, like filing libel cases, if it feels that it has been wronged by past or future reports aired by ABS-CBN.

"If it believed defendants' acts are contemptuous or obstructive of a free and fair hearing on the case, plaintiff has other remedies provided under the Rules of Court," wrote the judge.

Judge Balut, however, also warned ABS-CBN not to abuse the right to free expression, either to destroy GMA-7's reputation or influence the outcome of cases being heard in court:

"Needless to state, pending the trial of this case on its merits, free expression must not be used as an instrument to perpetrate unlawful ends to the obstruction of the administration of justice."

It can be recalled that GMA-7, in its petition to the court, claimed that ABS-CBN made it appear through its news reports on the alleged TV ratings manipulation that the Kapuso network is "a fraudster and manipulator of the ratings in Bacolod City by deliberately twisting and distorting the statement of Ms. Reformina, the general manager of AGB Nielsen..."

GMA-7 also complained that ABS-CBN's reports on the scandal were "orchestrated and/or scripted and intentionally perpetrated to defame, impeach and besmirch the reputation of plaintiff GMA 7."

THIRD JUDGE. Judge Balut is actually the third judge to hear the P15-million libel case filed by GMA-7 against ABS-CBN.

The first judge, Judge Samuel Gaerlan, inhibited himself following a motion for his inhibition by ABS-CBN. Gaerlan had earlier admitted that a member of ABS-CBN's legal department is his cousin.

Judge Henri Jean Paul Inting was the second judge to hear the case, but he also inhibited himself following a motion filed by ABS-CBN. Inting had earlier granted a petition for a temporary restraining order filed by GMA-7 against ABS-CBN's airing of reports about the TV ratings controversy.

In return, ABS-CBN filed a petition for certiorari before the Court of Appeals to stop the implementation of the TRO. ABS-CBN insisted that "the issue of corruption as brought out by the discovery of the TV ratings manipulation is a matter of clear public interest, and therefore needs to be reported on."

The Kapamilya network also argued that the TRO "grants GMA Network a virtual immunity from accusation." It added that no person or entity has ever enjoyed such a privilege, not even the highest public officers of the land.

Judge Inting explained that he is following "the Supreme Court ruling that at the very first sign of lack of faith and trust in his actions, whether well-grounded or not, the judge has no other alternative but to inhibit himself from the case."

GMA-7 REACTS. Meanwhile, in an official statement, GMA-7 said that they would pursue their libel case against ABS-CBN despite Judge Balut's denial of its petition. According to the Kapuso network, Judge Balut based his ruling partly on evidence that Inting had earlier dismissed.

"Current Judge Balut allowed what the previous judge found irrelevant—and that was to allow more testimonies from other ABS-CBN informants. In the hearing before Judge Balut, these ABS-CBN informants admitted they had no proof of employment with GMA, NO ID, no contracts," said GMA Network in their statement.

Reacting to the court's ruling GMA Network legal counsel Gener Asuncion said that, "Freedom of expression does not mean they (ABS-CBN) have the right to destroy another's reputation. An abuse of freedom also destroys it."

In the statement, GMA-7 also said that it would continue efforts to stop ABS-CBN from airing its reports.

"This is not the end of the libel suit. ABS-CBN wanted the end of the TRO and they wanted to block the injuction because ABS-CBN wanted to continue atacking the reputation of GMA Network. We will try not to let them do this," vowed GMA-7.

PEP MONTHLY REPORT: Showbiz controversies welcome The Year of the Rat

Pregnancy, network war, scandals and feuds, switching channels, breakups and reconciliation, and Gretchen Barretto were the contents of the showbiz news that became headlines here in PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) the past two months.

PEP now gives you a rundown of these stories in this special report.

BABY BOOM. The Year of the Rat was welcomed by the shocking news that young actress Jennylyn Mercado was three-weeks pregnant. The father of her child is, of course, boyfriend Patrick Garcia.

The young couple consulted a judge at the Makati City Hall on January 3 about their plan to marry. But the judge advised them to think about their decision thoroughly before plunging into a more binding relationship.

Before the end of February, however, Jennylyn and Patrick broke up. Jennylyn, now three months preggy, cited Patrick's lack of concern for her as the main reason she decided to cut ties with him.

Jennylyn was not the only star who admitted carrying a child. Sexy stars Sheree and Alicia Mayer also revealed that they are expecting their firstborns this year. Like Jennylyn, the two sexy stars are not yet married to the father of their unborn child—Sheree with singer Gian Magdangal and Alicia with a non-showbiz guy (reportedly the son of Jesus Is Lord leader Eddie Villanueva).

Meanwhile, former child actress Camille Prats gave birth to her first child with husband Anthony Linsangan last January 24 in Los Angeles, California. Camille and Anthony got married a few weeks before the young actress gave birth.

Another young actress who gave birth early this year was ABS-CBN talent Eda Nolan, 19 years old. The news about Eda's delivery last February 8 was a shock to many since news about her pregnancy never came out. What's more shocking is that the father of her son is a talent of the Kapuso network—Gian Carlos, 18, who was a runner-up in GMA-7's artista search, StarStruck 3. The relationship of the two somehow proved that love could blossom in the ongoing network war.

NETWORK WAR HEATS UP. Speaking of the network war, the ratings dispute between giant networks ABS-CBN and GMA-7 escalated at the start of the year. ABS-CBN presented several witnesses—most of whom agreed to show their faces on camera—while GMA-7 continued to deny the allegations.

Meanwhile, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (QC RTC) junked ABS-CBN's complaint against AGB Nielsen because the case was "prematurely filed." The Kapuso network lauded the court's decision, but the Kapamilya network vowed to pursue its TV ratings battle.

AGB Nielsen asked the court for protection against ABS-CBN. Later, the survey firm petitioned to sanction ABS-CBN for contempt, saying that the Kapamilya network's reports about the ratings manipulation in Bacolod were false. In its own investigation, AGB Nielsen claimed that ABS-CBN is also involved in promotional activities.

Another blow to ABS-CBN's case was the order of the QC RTC to stop issuing "damaging" statements against GMA-7. In return, ABS-CBN requested the Court of Appeals to nullify the TRO favoring the Kapuso network.

And so, the TV ratings battle continues.

"WOWOWEE" SCANDALS. The court battles of ABS-CBN do not only concern the TV ratings. Last January, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sued the Lopez-owned network for irregularities in the noontime show Wowowee because of an alleged anomaly in the "Wilyonaryo" segment of Willie Revillame's show.

The court also ordered the re-opening of the ULTRA tragedy case. The stampede during Wowowee's first anniversary on February 4, 2006 killed 74 people and injured dozens more. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to file charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries against some of the executives and employees of ABS-CBN.

WILLIE'S WOES. Although Willie Revillame is not among those who will be charged in connection with the ULTRA stampede, the Wowowee host still managed to get himself under the spotlight.

First and foremost, Willie was suspected of owning a smuggled Ferrari car. The TV host-comedian denied the allegation.

The Wowowee host's marriage to Liz Almoro was finally annulled last February 5 on grounds of psychological incapacity on both parties. Willie is now being linked to young actress Cristine Reyes, although both claim they are just friends.

LA GRETA STRIKES AGAIN. Probably the most controversial actress in the history of Philippine show business is none other than Gretchen Barretto. Whatever La Greta does makes headlines, whether the public likes it or not.

The Year of the Rat spewed several controversies that made Gretchen the talk of the town again. First on the list was her rumored affair with Dody Puno, which reportedly prompted Gretchen's live-in partner Tonyboy Cojuangco to throw her out of their house.

Although Gretchen neither confirmed nor denied the affair with Dody, she vehemently dismissed reports that Tonyboy asked her to leave. To show that they are still very much together, Gretchen and Tonyboy showed up holding hands at Jinggoy Estrada's birthday party last February 16.

Aside from Dody, Gretchen was also linked to Gretchen's brother-in-law, Ricky Yabut. Ricky is the brother of Denise Yabut, the estranged wife of Tonyboy. PEP reported that Gretchen and Ricky were allegedly seen kissing at Nuvo bar-restaurant in Greenbelt, Makati, last February 10. Gretchen just laughed off the report.

Gretchen was also involved in a spat with friend Nadia Montenegro. Gretchen claimed that Nadia was the one spreading malicious rumors about her. The two hurled accusations against each other. Nadia accused Gretchen of having "itim na puso" while Gretchen questioned Nadia's loyalty.

In an attempt to patch up things between Gretchen and Nadia, some showbiz folks arranged a meeting for them in Rembrandt Hotel on February 20. But the supposed "reconciliation" meeting turned ugly. According to eyewitnesses, drinking glasses even flew on the air after Gretchen and Nadia exchanged nasty words.

The two camps decided to keep quiet after Nadia apologized to Gretchen for spewing hurtful words.

Nevertheless, it was also because of Nadia that Gretchen walked out from her live guesting on Entertainment Live last February 23, while a video of Nadia speaking about their rift was playing.

Conveniently, these controversies surrounding La Greta greatly helped in promoting her music album under Star Records titled Unexpected. Many are now wondering if these issues are just being used to drumbeat her foray into the music scene. If it is, well, that's not really unexpected.

RUFA MAE ALSO SCORES. Gretchen's friend, Rufa Mae Quinto, also figured prominently the first two months.

Rufa Mae's tell-all interview in the February 2008 issue of YES! magazine generated so much controversy that Jessa Zaragoza decided to renew her feud with the sexy comedienne. This was because of Rufa Mae's story about her past relationship with singer Dingdong Avanzado. Rufa claimed that Dingdong started a relationship with Jessa while they were still together.

Jessa, who is now based in the U.S. with husband Dingdong and their daughter Jayda, called up local showbiz talk shows to express her disgust over Rufa Mae's allegations. Rufa Mae stuck to her story, saying it's her life, not Jessa's.

Recently, Rufa Mae's name was also linked to First Gentleman Mike Arroyo. According to reports, Rufa Mae and the First Gentleman flew to Hong Kong together. Although the sexy comedienne admitted that she and Mr. Arroyo sat beside each other on the plane, she clarified that they have no relationship at all and it was purely coincidence.

THE SONGBIRD FLIES, NOT! After admitting her relationship with SOP co-host Ogie Alcasid last year, Regine Velasquez once again hogs the limelight. No, she's not yet pregnant.

Rumors had circulated that the Asia's Songbird was moving to ABS-CBN. Although Ogie denied this at first, the very emotional episode of SOP last February 17 confirmed the news that Regine really planned to leave GMA-7.

The following week, February 24, Regine was nowhere to be found on SOP but she guested live on The Buzz, the showbiz talk show of ABS-CBN. The singer-actress admitted that she resigned from SOP because she was interested in a project she claimed ABS-CBN offered her—Betty La Fea.

But an ABS-CBN executive denied having made the offer to Regine and this got the Asia's Songbird hurt. She took it to mean that the Kapamilya network is no longer interested in getting her. So, the following week, she went back to SOP and announced that she has decided to stay in GMA-7.

KC SOARS HIGH. The Megastar's daughter, KC Concepcion, also made headlines these past few months.

KC made her acting debut on TV via a special episode in the long-running ABS-CBN drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya. The verdict? Critics and viewers alike were all praises for her performance.

KC is also scheduled to shoot her first film for Star Cinema, possibly with John Lloyd Cruz as her leading man.

She was also appointed by the United Nations as Ambassador Against Hunger.

KC's love life also became the talk of the town. She reportedly broke up with young director Lino Cayetano in Paris earlier this year. Lino is now going out with ex-girlfriend Bianca Gonzalez. The two were even spotted vacationing in Singapore.

KC, on the other hand, is now being linked to heartthrob Richard Gutierrez. The GMA-7 prime leading man admitted having sent flowers to KC last Valentine's Day. Now, negotiations are underway for a possible pairing of KC and Richard in a movie that might be co-produced by GMA Films and Star Cinema. If this movie project goes as planned, we might see the end of the network war.

RELATIONSHIPS. Aside from the KC-Lino breakup, other relationships also became hot items the first two months.

Estranged couple Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera settled their differences and are now on speaking terms. While Pops is very much involved with boyfriend Jomari Yllana, Martin's relationship with live-in partner Katrina Ojeda seems to be on the rocks. Martin was rumored to having an affair with the daughter of a princess who is married to Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. Martin denied the allegation.

Another estranged couple, Alessandra de Rossi and Jeremy Marquez, made headlines last January while they were in Davao del Norte for a celebrity tournament. Alex allegedly slapped Jeremy while in a heated conversation that was even caught on camera. Both Alex and Jeremy denied the slapping incident and PEP released the details of the real story.

Young actor Mark Herras broke up with EB Babes member Lian Paz, apparently because of the dancer's affair with a basketball player.

Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby both admitted that they had a short-lived "mutual understanding" in the past. Now, Toni is happy with boyfriend Paul Soriano while Sam is courting Anne Curtis again.

Luis Manzano also admitted for the first time his special "bonding" with Lobo star Angel Locsin.

PINOYS CONQUER THE WORLD. If Charice Pempengco became a singing sensation in YouTube last year and even guested on the Ellen DeGeneres show—two other Pinoy singers living abroad also made Filipinos very proud.

Fil-Austrian Vincent Bueno wowed all of Europe when he won the grand prize in Musical! The Show, a televised musical competition in Austria, which showcases contestants singing excerpts from well-loved musicals. Vincent was the first Filipino and Asian to win a major contest in Austrian television.

Meanwhile, Ramiele Malubay became the seventh Filipino-American who made it in the Top 24 of American Idol. Ramiele, who is now based in Miramar, Florida, is one of the favorites to become the seventh American Idol. At press time, Ramiele is one of the remaining eight female contestants.

These are just some of the biggest news stories that PEP covered at the start of the year. For the latest showbiz news, just continue logging on to www.pep.ph.

Yeng Constantino still basking in her glory after "Pinoy Dream Academy"

There's no doubt that Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA) had a big impact on Grand Star Dreamer Yeng Constantino's life.

THE BEGINNING.

Natawa siya and ayun, pinapirma ako.

May cameo role rin si Gary Valenciano as a computer nerd.

[source of news]

Regine Velasquez declared on SOP’s live episode on March 2, 2008 that she will remain a Kapuso and will never leave GMA-7 again if ever a bigger offer comes her way in the future. Asia’s Songbird also explained to the audience and televiewers in a 6-minute speech the reasons why she almost transfer to ABS-CBN and why she decided to stay with GMA-7.

Looks like GMA was able to stop Regine from transferring to ABS-CBN. However, Ara Mina (which already has a role in “Prinsesa ng Banyera“) and her sister Cristine Reyes, are now visible on ABS-CBN shows like Wowowee and ASAP. Rumor has it that Wendell Ramos is next.

Charo Santos-Concio, new ABS-CBN president

Congratulations to Charo Santos-Concio who has just been appointed president of ABS-CBN by Gabby Lopez, the company’s chairman and CEO.

Charo assumes the position formerly held by Freddie M. Garcia, then Cito Alejandro and then (temporarily) by Gabby himself. Charo was formerly EVP and channel head.In its New Year Mga Halu-Halong Hula-Hula last January, Funfare predicted that Charo would be promoted during the first quarter of the year but Charo didn’t believe it then.

Besides FMG (now happily retired), nobody perhaps deserves and is more qualified for the position than Charo who knows the business as she does the lines on her palms. She knows the ins and outs and the secrets of the trade, whether radio, TV or movies. Not many people know that Charo had her OJT (On-the-Job Training) at the ABS-CBN, under the late director Tony Santos, when she was about to graduate from St. Paul’s College (and after her reign as Baron Travel Girl and Miss Green Revolution). Yes, Charo rose from the ranks.Good luck, Charo! [source of news]
